Bail

From the moment you are arrested, your liberty is restricted. It is important to have a lawyer who can help you with a bail application so you can recover some of your liberty while we deal with the entirety of your file. If you are not able to get bail, you will remain in custody until your charges are dealt with.

Litigation

While it may seem tempting to try and represent yourself, running a criminal trial takes more than just "explaining your side of the story." There is a complex body of law that will impact the legal arguments you can make, and what the outcome of your trial will be.

Working with a lawyer who is knowledgeable about these details is important to improve the quality of your defense.

Sentencing

At the conclusion of a criminal matter, if you have not had your charges withdrawn, or you have been convicted, you will need to be sentenced. Working with a lawyer who will take their time to learn about you and your background is vital for a judge to craft a sentence that is appropriate for you.

About us

Millis Criminal Law

My name is Spencer Millis and I am a criminal defence lawyer servicing Calgary and its surrounding areas.

I graduated from the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law and received my J.D. (Juris Doctor) in 2022, and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2023.

Prior to attending Law School, I received my Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Criminal Justice from Mount Royal University in Calgary.

I believe in approaching my clients with patience, understanding, and empathy. Everyone has a unique set of circumstances that has led them to coming into contact with the criminal justice system. This is a stressful and terrifying prospect for many people. I view my role as having 6 important functions.

  1. Education: I want to minimize the amount of stress you have as much as I can by explaining how the justice system and its procedures work.

  2. Interviewing: I will discuss the details of your case as well as your personal background with you. This is important for every single stage of your case.

  3. File Review: I will review your file, and pay specific attention to any defences, holes in the Crown's case, or Charter breaches that might exist.

  4. Negotiation: I will engage in discussions with the Crown to see if there is an outcome we can reach that offers the most benefit to you, in the least amount of time.

  5. Advocacy: If negotiations are not successful, your case can go to trial and the Crown will be forced to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. There are rules of procedure and evidence that must be followed, and I will hold the Crown to those rules.

  6. Sentencing: If you are found guilty after trial, or you decide to plead guilty, I will advocate for you to get the best sentence possible. Your personal story will play an important role in influencing your sentence.

Law Office

How do you explain inexplicable luck? How do you describe indescribable relationships?

How do you express inexpressible memories?

And how do you define indefinable dreams?

You don’t. You tell the story, and let the listener do the defining.
